Press Release: Week 11 – Season 2016/17


Leaders Kalkara St Joseph run of 10 straight wins came to an end this week as they were defeated 5-3 by Mosta Horseshoe Bar A. The first six games ended up all square and saw the same sequence with Kalkara winning a game and Mosta replying immediately to level up. The game changer came in the seventh game as Neville Grech edged out Emmanuel Ciantar 3-2 to give Mosta Horsesehoe Bar A the lead for the first time in the match, which also meant a point was secured for the visitors. The last game was contested between Gordon Stanmore/Mario Aquilina and Albert Scerri/Brian Abela with the latter coming out on top in a 3-1 win to condemn Kalkara St Joseph to their first defeat of the season. Kirsten Aquilina, Gordon Stanmore and Andy Keen winning their games for Kalkara and Albert Scerri, Brian Abela and Godfrey Abela/Tony Borg winning for Mosta. Floriana Ajax A cruised past BBugia Cox Sports Club A 8-0 and now are joint leaders with Kalkara on 33 points with both teams scheduled to meet next on the 3rd February. Mosta Horseshoe Bar A kept their title hopes alive with this win and now trail the leaders by five points.

The first edition of the Malta Premier League of Darts got underway last week with game week one taking place at Lija Bocci Club.

Norbert Attard v David Attard 4-3
The first match featured brothers David and Norbert Attard, with the latter coming up on top in a 4-3 victory. N. Attard took the opening two legs with D. Attard levelling up the score taking the 3rd and 4th leg. The next two legs were also shared so the match went into a deciding leg with Norbert coming up on top in a closely balanced out match.

John Agius v John Ciantar 4-3
The second match also went into a deciding leg with John Agius claiming the win over John Ciantar. Ciantar took a two leg lead but a comeback by Agius saw the score reversed in his favour. An 84 checkout on the bull saw Ciantar level up the score again but in the 7th and final leg he missing four darts at the double which Agius took advantage of to claim the win.

Vincent Busutill v Brian Abela 4-0
The best performance of the night came from veteran player Vincent Busutill with a whitewash victory over Brian Abela. Busutill ended the night on an 83.49 three dart average, 100% checkout success and 140 check-out in the third leg.

Albert Scerri v Godfrey Abela 4-3
The last match of the night was another closely contested match between team mates Albert Scerri and Godfrey Abela. Abela started the better of the two and took a two leg lead but some high scoring from Scerri saw the match all square after 4 legs. Abela re-took the lead but Scerri replied straight away so for the third time in the night a match was going to be decided in the last leg. Both players matched each other’s scores but when it came to the winning double Scerri came on top to register the win.

The second ranking tournament took us to Mqabba with Norbert Attard continuing on his good form and taking the title in the final against Godfrey Abela. John Ciantar and Brian Abela finished in joint 3rd place.
The next ranking tournaments will be on 22nd January 2017 at Tottenham Hotspurs in Valletta.


The final group matches for the 5 a-side competition took place last week with Senglea M. Conquest, Gudja POs Bar B and Hamrun Education Bar A claiming the last three qualification spots which were still undecided.

The draw for the quarter final matches which featured 5 teams from division one and 3 teams from division two took place and paired up the following matches:
Top Half – Birzebbugia Cox Sports Club v Senglea M. Conquest and Mosta Horseshoe Bar A v Hamrun Education Bar A.
Botom Half – Floriana Ajax A v Gudja POs Bar B and Kalkara St Joseph v Zejtun Beland Bullseye.
The first legs are scheduled to take place on 01/03 with the return leg on 22/03.

The draws for the 4 a-side cup took place and five preliminaries are required to shape up the round of 16.
