Press Release: Week 17 – Season 2016/17


Division One – The much-anticipated top-of-the-table National League match between Kalkara St Joseph and Floriana Ajax A ended all square with both teams producing exceptional play. Norbert Attard gave the visitors the lead winning the opening game but an immediate reply by the reds saw them winning three consecutive games for a 3-1 lead at the midway point. Wins for Kalkara coming through Kirsten Aquilna and Mario Aquilina in the singles and the same pair in the doubles. Floriana reduced the gap with Vincent Busutill winning the 5th game with Kalkara replying immediately through Andy Keen to secure a point. A late rally from the Greens saw them winning the last two games through David Attard in the singles and Vincent Busutill/John Ciantar in the pairs to secure a hard-fought point which keeps both teams leading the way on 44 points with only 3 matches left. In other matches from the division Mosta Horseshoe Bar A defeated BBugia Cox Sports Club 6-2 and from the lower part of the table a 4-4 draw between Gudja POs Bar A and Bormla Bocci Club meant that Zejtun Beland Bullseye move out of the relegation places after an 8-0 walk-over victory over Zejtun Juventutis Domus.

Division Two – Hamrun Education Bar A produced a great performance in defeating leaders Bugibba Munchies Pub 6-2 and now lead the way on 35 points, one ahead of Bugibba. A win for Senglea M. Conquest over Floriana Ajax B kept their promotion hopes alive as they now trail Munchies in second place by three points.
Division Three – Mosta Horseshoe Bar B went into gameweek 17 needing a point to be officially crowned champions and they did it in style by whitewashing bottom side Mgarr The Hatch 8-0. Promotion contenders Bugibba Sun City and Hamrun Education Bar B both win hard fought matches against Mqabba St Mary BC and St Pauls Diamonds respectively.

The fourth and final Super Cup qualifier saw Tony Demanuele and Martin Debono booking their place at the last 32 stage. Both players required a deciding leg in their respective finals as they saw of the challenge Emmanuel Ciantar and George Mizzi in 3-2 wins.
