Press Release: Week 1 – Season 2016/17



BBugia Cox Sports Club A v Kalkara St Joseph 1-7

Kalkara SJ kicked off their 2016/17 campaign on a comfortable away win against BBugia Cox Sports Club A which set them on the right track as they will surely try to emulate last season`s success of winning the national title. Gordon Stanmore and Mario Aquilina won their opening games without dropping a leg to give Kalkara an early lead. Game 3 produced a surprise as BBugia`s Martin Cutajar won his game against Andy Keen 3-2 to reduce the gap to one. From this point onwards though all remaining five games went to the visitors with wins for Stanmore/M.Aquilina & Cohen/K.Aquilina in the doubles, followed by wins for Kirsten Aquilina, Joe Caruana, Emmanuel Ciantar in the singles. On the night four 180s were hit with two of them for Mario Cutajar and one for Anthony Briffa and Gordon Stanmore respectively.

Sixty-six players took part in the first ever Malta Premier League of Darts qualifier which saw the first two players claiming their spots in the main competition. The qualifier was played over two days with day one seeing all the players split into eight venues with one winner emerging from each venue which then faced each other on day two with Norbert Attard and John Ciantar securing their spot in the final tournament.

On day two, Norbert Attard edged out Mario Aquilina 3-2 in the semi-final and won with the same score line in the final against Andy Keen. On the other hand, John Ciantar won his semi-final also on the last leg against Albert Scerri and came back from a leg down to beat Neville Grech 3-1.

The second qualifier will take place on Tuesday 11th & Thursday 13th October 2016.
