Press Release: BIM Sports Magazine – November 2015

The 54th edition of the Malta national darts league commenced on Friday 9th October.

In the 1st division, pre-season indications point towards a three horse race for the title with the Floriana Ajax A, Kalkara St Joseph and Marsa St. Michaels battling out for the top honours with the remaining five teams in division one likely battling it out to avoid relegation but as we know in sports there are no sure things so expect an upset or two! After game-week two only Kalkara St Joseph are on maximum points followed by Marsa St. Michaels and Bormla Bocci Club A two points behind. Reigning champions Floriana Ajax A trail the leaders by 5 points with 1 draw and 1 loss in their opening two matches.

In the 2nd division, the newly formed team of Mosta Horseshoe bar look like a sure thing to win the division. Their team comprises of no less than 5 current or ex-national team players. Various teams will battle it out for the remaining promotion spot. Four teams have a perfect record after two games: Mosta Horseshoe Bar, Gudja POs Bar A, Floriana Ajax B and Zejtun Beland Bullseye.

The 29th edition of the Malta Darts Open will take place between Tuesday 10th – Thursday 12th November at the Topaz Hotel in Bugibba. This tournament is on the BDO and WDF Darts calendars and carries ranki ng points. Historically some top players have taken part in this tournament to ensure they have enough ranking points to take part at the BDO World Darts Championship which take place at the historical Lakeside venue in January.

Last year`s men`s edition was won by the 2001 World Champion, John “Boy” Walton which has already registered for this year`s tournament as he aims to retain his title. The women`s edition was won by Vibeke Solvik from Norway, the doubles men`s title by Karsten Kornath (Germany)/Greek No.1 ranked player John Michael and Women`s doubles title by Cheryl McLoughlin/Ann Chilton (England). Local player Albert “Grizzly Bear” Scerri kept our local hopes alive as he was eliminated at the semi-final stage in a close encounter against Kostas Pantelidis from Greece.

Players from 11 countries took part in this event last year (Malta, England, Italy, Holland, Scotland, Greece, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Cyprus and Switzerland). In the 2015 edition majority of these countries will re-feature and we have already confirmed players from (Turkey, Wales, Sweden and Estonia) as well.

Another record was broken during last year`s edition as a total of 255 players registered for this event which is an increase of 67 registration more than the 2013 Malta Open.

Highlighted are local players. Note: Andy Keen now is eligible to represent Malta in tournaments abroad.
